A Simple Grounding Meditation

You know that feeling when you’re kind of floating through your day? Your thoughts are everywhere, you can’t focus, you feel anxious, you have brain fog, or maybe you can’t stop daydreaming. That’s usually a sign you need to ground. Tripping, dropping things, running into things and feeling unusually clumsy are also signs you need to ground.

Grounding is one of the first things I recommend to anyone, whether they’re a client, a friend, or someone who messaged me out of the blue because they feel stuck. It’s simple to do, it helps keep your energy protected, and it makes a real difference in the quality of your life.

What Is Grounding, Anyway?

Grounding is reconnecting your energy with Mother Earth. We’re spiritual beings having a very physical experience here, and it’s easy to drift up and out, especially if you’re sensitive, stressed, or doing a lot of spiritual work that takes you into higher realms. Grounding pulls you back down into your body and anchors you. This is extremely important, because when you’re ungrounded, your energy field is highly susceptible to becoming compromised. Being fully in your body is one of the foremost personal boundaries you can set.

When you’re grounded, you feel steadier. Clearer. More like yourself. It’s also protective. A grounded, anchored person is a lot harder for heavy energy to latch onto, because you’re fully present and fully in your sovereignty.

It’s important to ground every single day, and for me, I find I need to ground myself several times a day. I tend to be an overthinker. I sometimes loop in my head with thoughts. I often get distracted and I’m very emotional. Grounding for me is essential.

The Grounding Meditation

You can do this sitting in a chair with your feet flat on the floor, or sitting or standing barefoot on the actual ground outside. And if you are able to find a place under a tree, you have found the perfect grounding spot.

Grow your roots.

Close your eyes and take a few slow, deep breaths, in through your nose and out through your mouth. Let your shoulders drop.

Imagine tree roots growing down from the soles of your feet, and spreading out across the ground around you, much like how a tree’s roots spread outward from the trunk and across the soil around it. Watch as some of the roots travel downward. Down through the floor if you’re inside. Down through the soil, past the rocks and the water and the many layers of the Earth, all the way down to her warm, glowing center. Take your time doing this. Imagine these thick and strong roots weaving past all the elements they encounter on their journey to Earth’s core.

Ask Gaia (Mother Earth) to please accept these energetic roots, anchoring your connection to her in love and light.

Anchor yourself.

Wrap your roots around that glowing center. Fully immerse your awareness in what it feels like to have this strong and stable connection. You may notice that your feet and legs start to feel heavier. They are weighted down by this connection. Feel how solidly you are held there. I often imagine these roots like really strong and unbreakable rubber bands or elastics, looped around the top of my feet and around Earth’s core. When I lift my feet it’s quite difficult to do and I can feel the pressure of the elastic band pulling my feet back down to the ground. Enjoy and fully immerse yourself in this feeling of stability and connection. Use your new energetic root pathway to sink any feelings of anxiety, fear, exhaustion, confusion, or whatever may be bothering you into the Earth. All of the negativity released will be transmuted and dispersed. Thank Gaia. If you’re outside near a tree, thank nature and thank the tree. Trees assist you in this process.

If you have time to go further, I suggest doing the following:

Draw the Earth’s energy up.

Once you are fully anchored, imagine that warm, golden, maternal Earth energy flowing back up through your energetic root pathway. Feel it come into your feet, your legs, your hips, and keep filling you up, all the way through your body along your spine, and up through the crown of your head. Imagine it erupting like a lava flow out of your crown, bathing you in that warm, restorative energy as it runs down your body and back into the Earth in all directions around you.

Bring in the light from above.

Imagine a beautiful, glowing white light coming down from above in a column, engulfing your entire body. It flows in through your crown, and starts to flow down your spine, past your hips, legs and feet, down through that energetic root pathway you created, and flowing into the heart of Gaia. You have become a conduit of healing love and light for the planet by doing this.

Close the circuit.

Finish by letting the two energy streams meet in the middle at your root chakra. Feel Gaia’s energy flowing up through your roots, reaching your root chakra at the top of your legs, and recirculating back down into the Earth. Like the closed loop of an energy circuit. Feel the white light energy from above coming down through your crown, all along the front of your body until it meets the root chakra, where it touches and blends with Gaia’s energy stream, then flows back up through your spine and back out your crown. Stay in the energy and imagine the two closed loop circuits, moving through your upper and lower body. You are supported from above and below, continually bringing in the light from above, and releasing any negativity to the Earth below, bringing the Mother’s nurturing and supportive energy flow back to you.

Thank the Light. Thank our Mother Gaia. Both have been holding and supporting you this whole time. And now you’re aware of and actively engaging with this source of love and support.

This can take 3 minutes or 20. It all counts. The more you do it, the stronger you’ll build and feel the connection. Take your time with this one at first. Don’t rush through it. Once you start to really build that connection you’ll find you’re able to complete this grounding exercise almost instantly. It will be more of a refreshed reconnection versus trying to build and establish one.

Make It a Habit

Grounding works best when you do it every day, not just when things fall apart. Pair it with something you already do, like your morning routine or right before bed, so it becomes automatic.

Want More?

Grounding is just one of the practices I recommend. You’ll find the others, including centering and cord cutting, on my Daily Practices page.

And if you’ve been grounding, clearing, and doing all the things, and something still feels stuck, it might be more than you can clear on your own. A free 20-minute consultation is always there if you want to talk it through.
